Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) Hyderabad :

  • FPAI Hyderabad, 6-3-883/F, Topaz Building, Punjagutta Office Colony Lane,Punjagutta, Hyderabad, 500082

We have been mapping FPAI Clinics in different parts of India. We went visiting the FPAI Hyderabad Branch and it was one of the biggest independent branch we have seen. It was an independent building, in the middle of the city. It had a lovely park outside the hospital. Interestingly enough there was a diagnostic Centre right below it.

The registration fee is Rs 50. There would be a minimal cost for further procedures required.

We went inside the first floor of the building. It had a lot of patients and their families sitting right outside the Out Patient Department section. There were 2 surgeries that were conducted that day. We meet the person in charge who was willing to show us around.

The place had a doctor, a counsellor, some operating rooms and a ward as well.

They even had some posters that provided information regarding Medical Termination of Pregnancy and the number of months under which one could avail the services. We met the Auxiliary Nurse Midwife who was present at the clinic and who also showed us some of the rooms as well as some of the services available. At this specific clinic they only provided abortions for up to 12 weeks ( 1st Trimester).

(Poster  in Telegu explaining different months within which abortion can be performed)

The different types of services that come along :

  1. Sterilisation (Both Female and Male)
  2. Temporary Methods : ( IUD, Oral Pills)
  3. Medical Termination of Pregnancy
  4. Cancer Screenings

What happens when a gynaecologist, a poet and a man walk into the room?

With four lovely performers and three speakers, Hidden Pockets and Krantikalli for #Sep28 campaign took this initiative to bring young people together and talk about Women’s Health and the City. The best part was that we had a gynecologist with us as a speaker. Dr. Suchitra is a medical officer for Family planning Association of India at the Delhi branch. Having a gynecologist among us made the audience very excited. The youngest in the crowd was a 16 years old performer.

The event was conducted at the Playground Creative House in Defense Colony, Delhi. The event started with two of the lovely performers reciting their poems. Brindalakshmi through her poems voiced the need for Red Lipstick, as if every women in the room was dying to put the red lipstick but was scared.  Anuradha recited her poetry in Hindi wherein she connected various different women and their struggles with health. Ankita spoke about body shaming and loving our own bodies while Amia brought a young adolescent’s anxieties into the room. The room was filled with an aura where we all had some questions to be answered. We all could connect with the poems, and we all connected with each other.

To the make the evening more interesting, we had our speakers next.  We had three speakers, Aisha from Hidden Pockets Collective, who mapped public health centers, and is a single women staying in a metropolitan city, went first. Second was Nitin, a man in a women’s meet, who spoke about how important it is to be a part of such discussions. As a partner, a brother and a friend, he wanted to be more engaged in these issues and be more sensitive to such issues. And third was the gynecologist, Dr. Suchitra.

The conversation was mostly focused on discussing public health centers and how difficult it is for women to access health centers, followed by sharing of experience on how it felt to visit Family Planning Association for the first time. Nitin shared his experience about visiting clinics and understanding how important it is to visit these centers with your partners.  And then we had the gynecologist talking about safe abortion, about how it is a women’s right to get a safe abortion and also about myths related to abortion.

Slowly the audience in the room started opening up. And then one by one we had the women asking questions. There was an excitement as well as seriousness in the room. Excitement because women were finally asking questions directly to a gynecologist and seriousness because all were paying attention to what the doctor was saying. The questions were related to periods, methods to contraception, pregnancy, safe abortion etc..

The audience also got to know about FPAI (Family Planning Association of India).  FPA India envisages sexual and reproductive health for all as a human right, including gender equality leading to alleviation of poverty, population stabilization and sustainable development. They have clinics around India such as in Delhi, Agra, Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Chennai, and Mumbai. We got to know how  FPAI follows ‘No Refusal Policy’ and also about how it gives importance to “after care” post having abortion and helps the person in understanding choices to contraception.

To sum up the beautiful evening, we had our performers recite their amazing poems. By the end a few still had questions, few looked content and while a few others were still in that fascinating aura.

Hidden Pockets Collective would like to thank out host partners @Krantikaali for helping us conduct this event in Delhi.

Delhi, Ahmadabad, Chennai, Lucknow, Agra, Bangalore, Mumbai and few more places. To know more about them you can visit their website: www.fpaindia.org

So where do you go if you are looking for Sexual and reproductive health aid in Bangalore?
Private hospitals? Clinics? Nowhere? For those who are still struggling, for those who are suffering cause they dont know where to go, for those who have suffered a lot because of judgmental comments by the service provider, high prices, let me introduce you to FPAI – Bangalore. A place where you wont be judged. A place where you would feel safe. A place where services are affordable and a place where proper guidance and counselling would be given for Sexual and reproductive health.

The clinic is situated at City Corporation Maternity Home Complex, 1st Floor, Palace Guttahalli (Guttahalli circle), BANGALORE – 560 003. For those who have no
clue about this place, let me tell you it is very close to Le Meridien Hotel and Bangalore Golf club, Sankey Road. As you reach the complex’s gate, you would see the FPAI board
on the left side of the building. On the first floor you would find the Admin team of FPAI – Bangalore. From the gate if you walk towards the right, you would see a path on your left which would take you to the clinic (currently which is under maintenance now; till it is ready one can visit the doctor on the first floor)
The clinic operates from 9 am -5 pm.

So what is the procedure followed by FPAI – Bangalore?

– The first thing is Registration: Here the person would be asked the reason for coming to FPAI. Is for MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) in other words safe abortion
or sterlization.
– Then the person is sent to the counselor where the counselor discusses what all happened and what can be done. Privacy is given utmost importance.
– Then the person is provided with consultation. It is checked whether the person is on her first trimester or second. Then she is provided with proper guidance on what
she is required to do.
– During the medication, if the person is asked to take abortion pill, she is provided with proper guidelines on how to consume them. And if minor operation is required
the she is guided accordingly. FPAI – Bangalore currently has 10 beds and one minor operation theater. And the clinic is very clean.
– One week later a follow up is done, where the person is asked to come back. This is done so as to check whether the pregnancy is completely terminated and the
person is safe.

FPAI – Bangalore also gives a counselling about Family Planning Methods. They also provide people with free contraceptives for example free condoms.
Apart from MTP, FPAI also does HIV testing, Cervical cancer test (compulsory for women above 30 years), Vasectomy, tubectomy and test for breast cancer.
The tests are done after the consent of the patient only. All the tests are done in the Laboratory.

FPAI Bangalore also has Adolescent health clinic and also does Male sterilization.

FPAI follows no refusal policy, this means nobody is refused or sent back without providing medical services and help.
Privacy and confidentiality is the most important aspect that FPAI follows.Whoever comes to the clinic needs to just register with one’s name.
This is required, to keep a count of the patients. It is not for public to examine. Let it be a married women or unmarried women, the information of the patient is
kept highly confidential. Nobody asks the patient uncomfortable questions like are you married or not? Where is the husband?
Everybody is treated with dignity at FPAI.

Namma bangaluru, I found FPAI – Bangalore very friendly and approachable. If required, kindly try utilizing this clinic. It’s friendly, non-judgmental, safe, clean and affordable.
The whole facility would cost around 500 INR. Kindly utilize this amazing clinic. Try it out and refer it to the ladies around.
Let us all promote safe abortion and health care around us.

PS:  “FPA India clinics may charge, what we prefer to call as a ‘partial user fee’ to the clients for seeking abortion or any other SRH service. This fee is very subsidized and helps the Association meet some running costs. However, all FPA India clinics also have a “NO REFUSAL POLICY”, which states that no client walking into any FPA India facility is denied any service, especially if he/she is unable to afford even the subsidized fee. Thus, poor and marginalized clients can also access quality services in FPAI clinics. Only when the facility is not equipped to provide a particular service (for example some client may need a specialized service, or admission or higher level emergency care) are clients to other facilities.”

Where can I get an abortion in Lucknow?

Finding places in Lucknow can be a pain, especially if you are navigating the old part of city. Narrow lanes, slow traffic and lack of signs, all makes it a tough task. As a volunteer for Hidden-Pockets, my colleague and I, recently decided to look for places that offer sexual and reproductive health services in Lucknow. So we paid a visit to a family planning clinic of Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) Lucknow. As per FPAI Lucknow branch office, FPAI has 3 clinics in Lucknow. Finding the clinics’ number was not easy, as they don’t have any official landline number for their clinics. Google maps was also of limited help because the information available on the Internet about FPAI Lucknow is outdated with wrong numbers. So we used the rough directions received from Lucknow branch office, to visit the FPAI clinic located nearest to us, which was Sadar area inside Cantt. General hospital.

Directions: Riding on a scooty, we missed the turn for the clinic and had to take a U-turn back to Burlington crossing. (People visiting it from Hazratganj, please take a left from Burlington crossing and go straight). Once you are on the road to Sadar from Burlington crossing, you have to drive straight till you cross a flyover. As you descend from the flyover, look for Cantt. General hospital on the right.

After reaching the Cantt. General hospital, finding the clinic itself was easy. There was a big sign in the parking at the entrance, showing the way to the clinic. Clinic occupies first three rooms of a long corridor and is a hub of activity with a staff of 10.

As we made our entrance into one of the rooms, three women, who though relatively surprised at seeing us, greeted us warmly. We informed them about our purpose and settled to have a conversation. They were working as counsellors at the clinic.

Services offered: Talking to the counsellors was informative as they told us about the range of services provided at the clinic (See the pic). Anyone can avail of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services at the clinic by just walking in without any prior appointment or ID proof. They also have tie-ups with government functionaries like ASHA workers in rural areas. According to the staff, regular village camps are conducted by clinic. ASHA workers also refer patients to the clinic and get a small incentive for the referral.

That particular clinic has been in operation for more than 30 years. It shares both the premises and facilities of Cantt. General hospital like pathology labs. It has an 8-bed unit with one doctor. Currently, the clinic doesn’t provide 2rd trimester MTP services and refers patients to Queen Mary hospital in Lucknow, whenever any such case comes up. The clinic currently did not have any male patients. This, we believe, was due to lack of outreach effort by the clinic and also because of low awareness about its services in Lucknow city area. Talking to the counsellors at the clinic we felt comfortable and welcomed. They showed us around the clinic and were proud of the work they were doing. One of the counsellors is close to retirement after serving a long term with the clinic.

Right counselling continues to be a big challenge in the Indian healthcare system. Discussing your health issues in a safe and trusted environment with trained professionals is difficult. It often makes people anxious, especially sexual and reproductive health related issues. FPAI clinic at Cantt. General Hospital can be a good resource for someone looking for counselling on sexual and reproductive health in Lucknow. It has a friendly environment and experienced staff who are more than willing to listen to your concerns and answer your queries with a smile. Do check them out!

Where to look for Sexual and reproductive health aid in Ahmedabad

Where to look for Sexual and reproductive health aid in Ahmedabad

Hidden Pockets visited Ahmedabad and decided to walk the city. The visit became more exciting when we got to know that FPAI i.e. Family Planning association of India is also present in Ahmedabad.  Hidden Pockets decided to visit the clinic. “FPAI is a voluntary non-governmental organization which pioneered the family planning movement in India. It is committed to gender equality and to eliminate discrimination which threatens individual well-being and leads to wide spread violation of health and human rights particularly of adolescents and young women.” – FPAI Brochure.

The administration building of FPAI, Ahmedabad is located at Nashabandhi Compound, Bhadra opposite to Apna bazaar. It is very close to the most famous ‘New Lucky Restaurant’. We went and met the programme head and also the branch manager. There we got to know that the FPAI clinic is at Madhupur, so we headed towards the clinic. The clinic is very close to the Namaste Circle (one can see hands statue in a namaste gesture 😊) and Haripura Gardens. As soon as one reaches the Haripura Gardens, take the road that goes inside along the garden. Keep walking for 10-15 mins. And then one can see an Urban Health Centre on the left. FPAI is at the 2 floor.

The best part of FPAI staff is the smile on their faces, which makes the clinic filled with positive vibes. As we entered the clinic, we met the counsellor who had a bright smile on her face. She showed us around the clinic. FPAI, Ahmedabad has a counsellor room, examination room, tests room, and a minor operation theatre.

Process to get an Medical Termination of Pregnancy:

First the person is registered. His/her name and other information is kept confidential. Then the person is sent to the counsellor where he or she interacts with the counsellor. FPAI follows no refusal policy. No one is refused here. If the scope is beyond FPAI, then it refers the person to some other organization. After the counselling the person is sent to the examination room and then the doctor tells what all is needed to be done. All tests are done and then the person is sent back.

FPAI, Ahmedabad also believes in the importance of after care. It keeps in touch with the person and provides after care. FPAI believes that it is very important to see if abortion (medical termination of pregnancy – MTP) is safely completed and the person is safe. It asks the person to come back after 15 days for a checkup. It also provides alternatives to those who cannot come back after 15 days.

FPAI, Ahmedabad provides MTP services, long term contraception plans, HIV and AIDS testing, Pap smear test and breast cancer testing. One of the special thing about this clinic is that it also has special OPD on Fridays for males, adolescents and MSM (Men who have sex with men). They also provide family planning counselling. All this is done at a very minimal rate  ( Maximum Rs 1000) and few of the pills are completely free.

This branch also does MTP for 2nd Trimester ( This is mostly after 12 weeks of pregnancy). It is very hard to find a reliable place where 2nd Trimester is performed and FPAI Ahmedabad is one of it where one can expect accountability.

People from Ahmedabad, if required kindly utilize this amazing facility and ask whoever is in need to visit FPAI, Ahmedabad.

PS: “FPA India clinics may charge, what we prefer to call as a ‘partial user fee’ to the clients for seeking abortion or any other SRH service.
